Leadership, teamwork, encouragement, production, patience, camaraderie and superstardom…just a few of the many words that describe our local Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build Weekend.
Seven ladies from HOLT Architects signed up for this day of volunteering – looking forward to giving back to the Tompkins Community, meeting new people, and teaming with fellow HOLT employees on a project outside of the office.
As we were leaving the HOLT office to head to the site we stopped for a photo — which, stylized and posed, is in stark contrast to what we were about to be a part of: women busy with hammers pounding, skill saws cutting, and hundreds of 2″x 6″ pieces of lumber being put together to form a house.
Once on-site, in our groups, and briefed on safely completing the work ahead, our team of about 15 women transformed a plan on paper into a perfectly measured wood-frame wall structure. Throughout the construction we laughed, joked, and tried to figure out our six degrees of separation — all while sharing skill sets and the putting the pieces together.
Women power is certainly something, and it was definitely abundant on the build site this weekend (as evidenced by #tch4h); and even more so is being a part of a collective effort in making our community a better place. Thank you Habitat for Humanity of Tompkins and Cortland Counties and all of the superstar ladies who made this event so memorable, including head superstar “Coz”, our team leader Julie, and my personal HOLT superstar Cate Blakemore who could design and build a house all by herself!
